Masaaki Hatsumi is the 15th Soke of this school. With the exception of Shoden Gata, very little is known about these levels in Gikan ryu. The school is supposed to consist of five traditional levels, which are: Shoden Gata, Chuden Gata, Okuden Gata, Kaiden Gata and Menkyo Kaiden. Those are also known characteristics of Gikan ryu. Gikanbo was a Koppo Jutsu, Hicho jutsu (jumping) and Senban Nage (blade throwing) specialist. He learned his skills from the master named Akimoto Kanai Moriyoshi. The founder of this martial art system was Uryu Hangan Gikanbo, who lived in the Erioku period.
